Create commitment

To create commitments, you can use the step-by-step wizard in Commitment Manager to complete the process.

You can:

  • Add a commitment for contracts that have already started and for those that start at a future date.

  • Create multiple commitments. For example, different cloud environments can be covered by different commitments. Ideally, commitments should be based on one contract, as each contract has its own specific terms, timelines, and spending commitments. However, if commitments have amendments or get merged, then you can create another commitment.

To create a new commitment:

  1. Sign in to the DoiT console, select Billing from the top navigation bar, and then select Commitment Manager.

    The Commitment Manager screen.

  2. Select Create commitment.

General

In General, you provide the high-level details.

  1. Select the provider for whom you want to create a commitment.

  2. In Commitment Manager name, enter a name for this commitment.

  3. (Optional) From the Contracts list, select the contracts that establish the committed spend for this commitment. Contract details are automatically retrieved from your billing account, however, selecting a contract automatically populates the period information in the next step. You can also enter this information manually.

  4. From the Currency list, select the currency you want to use.

  5. Select Next.

Commitment information

In Commitment information, you provide the details about the commitment. Check your contract terms and conditions to understand your commitment. See also Commitment Manager terminology.

  1. In Start date, select the date the commitment is scheduled to start.

  2. In Number of Periods list, select the period that this commitment is for. Period signifies the duration of your commitment. For example, if your commitment is 1 year then select 1.

  3. In Period length (months), specify the commitment duration period in months. For example, if your commitment period is 1 year, enter 12.

  4. When you sign a commitment with a cloud provider or the partner with whom you have the commitment, it specifies a commitment value. For example, if your commitment value is $100,000 per year, this means you must spend at least $100,000 on the cloud provider's services to fulfill your commitment and receive the associated benefits. In Commitment value, enter the total monetary amount of your commitment value.

  5. There is often a cap on how much of your marketplace spending counts towards your commitment. This cap is expressed as a percentage. Check your contract terms and conditions to find the marketplace spend. In Marketplace spend, specify the percentage of marketplace purchases that contribute to the commitment.

  6. If your commitment allows extending or transferring unused commitment value from one period to the next, you can configure this in Commitment rollover. Check your contract terms and conditions to understand your commitment rollover.

    • If your commitment enables any excess to be rolled over to the next period, in Excess, select Yes, this plan has excess rollover. In Amount, enter the number directly or use the arrows to enter the percentage of excess commitment value that can be rolled over. Excess rollover means that all or part of the excess from the period is counted toward the following period's commitment.
    • If your commitment enables any shortfall to be rolled over to the next period, select Yes, this plan has shortfall rollover. In Amount, enter the number directly or use the arrows to enter the percentage of commitment value shortfall that can be rolled over. This means you have to spend the carried-over amount plus your new commitment in the next period.
  7. Select Next.
